3D Sonification of the Horizon - Abstract

This project was built on the hypothesis that sonification of the horizon by means of Virtual 3D line of
sound can improve a pilot’s perception of the horizon. Investigations were made in the field of sound for representing a line and characteristics of such sound.

Virtual Music Composer – Abstract

The project goal is to make a virtual sound toolbox for music composer. This toolbox contains different
tools to manipulate different aspects of physical models of sound. For controlling and manipulation of the sound in the CAVE’s virtual environment and avatar’s movement, the composer body movements are captured using marker less vision-based motion capture system. There are two possible viewpoints for the VR environment: one for the composer, the other for audiences to see the composer performing.

VR Base Edutainment (VRBE) - Abstract

This project is an attempt of making an edutainment product using capabilities of VR. Presently VRBE
project is aim to teach “Metal Casting Process” topic of mechanical engineering by exploring the
capabilities of VR medium. Implementation into game format is to keep the student motivated for learning. The prototype game design plan includes three types of sensory system viz. vision, aural and touch. The game development environment uses open source softwares. The development phase is divided in two phases. The first phase is more focused on the research and designing a framework for VR Game development. The second phase is focused on developing the prototype VR game using first phase output. Effort will be to release the VR game for test after adding multilevel and more features. The product of the first phase is game design concept document and possible framework.

Comparative Study of Illumination Techniques for a Telerobotics Simulator– Abstract

The motivation of the thesis is to find suitable technique (s) for illumination realism which can be
implemented in the existing telerobotics training simulator. This will help the user to test their telerobotics navigation skill in a virtual environment which has realistic illumination conditions. “Comparative Study of illumination Techniques for Telerobotics Simulator” is about comparison done among the available local illumination (LI), global illumination (GI) and image based lighting (IBL) techniques. The factors considered for our experiment setup are illumination realism response, photorealism response and rendering time. The test subjects are asked to respond in the scale of 1 to 6. Responses above 3 signifies the acceptable realism and below 3 are non acceptable. Experiment A is conducted to find the acceptable illumination response among the various rendering techniques available in Non real time renderer (Maya). Experiment B is conducted to find the illumination realism response with respect to the IBL. Experiment C is to cross check the responses of test subjects given in Experiment A and B. Experiment RT is conducted to test the illumination realism response of the IBL approximation plug-ins (LightGen and MedianCut) in non real time and real time renderer (OpenSG). The analysis shows that in the real time renderer the geometric realism is more dominant factor than illumination realism for the photorealism. The analysis has revealed few possible illumination techniques which can be considered for optimization. After optimization it can be further attempted for integrating in the telerobotics simulator for illumination realism. The investigation with our setup shows that atleast 3 components of illumination realism should have acceptable realism response for acceptable photorealism.
